Event Name: Mary's Hour
Location: Immaculate Conception Parish - Sacramento
Date(s): May 19, 2012
Time: Starts: 10:00 AM Ends: 1:00 PM

At the request of Bishop Jaime Soto, parishes throughtout the Diocese of Sacramento are participating in a letter-writing campaign this month as part of a coordinated diocesan response to the mandate issued earlier this year by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. If the mandate stands, the federal government will force Catholic institutions to provide insurance coverage for sterilization and contraception, including abortion-inducing drugs, even though it violates the religious beliefs of Catholics.
The public is invited to a public eucharistic procession of prayer as a witness for religious liberty on Saturday, June 9, following the 5 p.m. vigil Mass of Corpus Christi at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Bishop Soto will lead a eucharistic procession from the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, located at 1017 11th St., through downtown Sacramento to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located at 711 T St., with several stops for prayer along the way. Similar processions that day will take place after the vigil Masses at Sacred Heart Parish in Red Bluff (5:15 p.m.) and St. John the Baptist Parish in Chico (5 p.m.), and on Sunday, June 10 at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Vallejo, following the 2 p.m. Mass.
American Catholics must resist unjust laws "as a duty of citizenship and an obligation of faith," the Administrative Committee of the U.S. bishops said in a statement on religious liberty released April 12. The full text can be found at the link below.
Titled "Our First, Most Cherished Liberty," the 12-page statement by the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty also calls for "a fortnight for freedom" from June 21, the vigil of the feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, to July 4, U.S. Independence Day.
"This special period of prayer, study, catechesis and public action would emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty," the committee said. "Dioceses and parishes around the country could choose a date in that period for special events that would constitute a great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty."
The April issue of Catholic Herald Magazine included a three-page special report on religious freedom, including a message from Bishop Soto. He notes: "The notion that our faith can no longer define our works is a threat to the grace we bring in the name of Christ. It will inhibit our ability to be 'doers of the Word." (James 1:22). The bishop urges the Catholic faithful to join the Catholic Legislative Network atwww.cacatholic.org and communicate with the White House and congressional representatives to urge a clear definition of religious employer.
